We are proud to share the latest publication developed within the framework of the CO-CAPTAIN project, featured in the European Journal of Public Health. The article, “Barriers and facilitators to healthcare services of people with mental ill-health in Europe”, explores the challenges and opportunities for improving access to healthcare services for people with mental ill-health (PMIH) in Austria, Greece, Poland, and Spain.
People experiencing mental ill-health face significantly higher cancer mortality rates compared to the general population. One of the key contributing factors is the difficulty they encounter in accessing preventive healthcare services. Through qualitative research involving 81 participants—including individuals with mental health challenges, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and service managers—the study sheds light on their experiences within healthcare systems.
The findings reveal a complex landscape of barriers and facilitators to accessing care. Discrimination, a lack of accessible information, and inflexible healthcare services emerged as major obstacles, often preventing PMIH from benefiting from preventive cancer care. On the other hand, social support systems, empowerment, and tailored, person-centered approaches were identified as critical facilitators that can help overcome these challenges.
The research emphasizes the importance of tailored interventions and the creation of supportive environments that address the specific needs of PMIH. By promoting health literacy and ensuring flexibility in healthcare delivery, we can begin to dismantle structural barriers and improve access to preventive care.
This work underscores the central mission of the CO-CAPTAIN project: adapting and implementing the Patient Navigation Model to reduce health inequalities and ensure that no one is left behind. Early intervention and inclusive healthcare strategies are not only cost-effective but also essential for improving long-term health outcomes and strengthening healthcare systems.
